Detailer’s Tricks of the Trade: Proper Decontamination Prep (The Step Most People Rush)
If there’s one stage that separates average results from genuinely high-end finishes, it’s decontamination prep.
Most people want to jump straight into polishing or protection, but if the surface isn’t properly decontaminated first, you’re working on top of embedded grime, fallout, and residues. That means reduced gloss, poor bonding, and more risk of marring.
Before we get into it, it’s worth noting, every car and every surface is different. This process is a guide to the products and what they can do within the realm of decontamination. Some steps may not always be necessary depending on the condition of the vehicle, and in some cases, steps can be combined.
Step 1: Wheels First Always
Before touching the paint, start with the dirtiest part of the car.
A proper wheel clean prevents brake dust and grime from splashing back onto freshly cleaned panels later.
Process:
- Spray down the wheels to knock off loose debris
- Apply Envoke Non Acid Wheel Cleaner liberally
- Agitate with brushes (barrel, face, and around lug nuts)
- Rinse thoroughly
This product is safe but effective, perfect for regular use without stressing finishes.
Step 2: Strip Wash - Reset the Surface
Before you start removing contamination, you need to remove any existing waxes, sealants, or traffic film.
This is where Envoke Reboot Shampoo comes in.
Why it matters:
If you don’t strip the surface properly, iron removers and tar removers won’t work as effectively—they’ll be fighting through layers.
How to use it:
- Foam the vehicle or use a two-bucket wash method
- Let the shampoo dwell briefly (don’t let it dry)
- Wash thoroughly and rinse
This step gives you a clean, bare surface ready for chemical decon.
Step 3: Iron Removal - The Invisible Contamination
Even cars that look clean are covered in embedded iron particles from brake dust and environmental fallout.
That’s where Angelwax Revelation comes in.
Application:
- Spray directly onto a wet or dry panel
- Let it dwell until you see the colour change
- Do not let it dry
- Rinse thoroughly
Pro tip:
Focus on lower panels, rear sections, and behind wheels, these areas hold the most contamination.
Step 4: Tar & Adhesive Removal
Next up is tar, road grime, and stubborn residues.
Use Angelwax Revenge to break down those heavier contaminants.
How to approach it:
- Apply to affected areas (lower doors, bumpers, behind wheels)
- Let it dwell briefly
- Gently wipe if needed
- Rinse thoroughly
This step is often skipped, but it’s critical if you want a truly clean surface before claying.
Step 5: Clay Bar Stage - Mechanical Decontamination
Now that chemical decontamination is done, it’s time for the physical removal of anything left behind.
This is where lubrication is everything.
Option 1: Dedicated Clay Lube
Use Envoke Decon Lube for a purpose-built, ultra-slick experience.
Option 2: Alternate Premium Lube
Angelwax Uber Lube is another excellent option with incredible glide and control.
Technique:
- Work in small sections
- Keep the surface well lubricated
- Use light pressure only
- Fold the clay regularly
Pro tip (advanced):
With the right approach, steps can sometimes be combined. For example, when using Envoke Decon Lube, some detailers will carry out the iron removal and clay process together in one step to streamline the process. This isn’t always necessary, but it can be an efficient method on certain vehicles and conditions.
Step 6: Final Rinse & Inspection
Once claying is complete:
- Rinse the vehicle thoroughly
- Dry with a clean microfiber drying towel
Run your hand lightly across the paint, you should feel a completely smooth surface. If not, you may need to revisit certain areas.
Step 7: What Comes Next
At this point, the vehicle is properly prepped for:
- Machine polishing (using Angelwax compounds and polishes)
- Protection (ceramic coatings, sealants, etc.)
Skipping or rushing decontamination is one of the biggest mistakes in detailing. Taking the time here makes everything that follows easier, safer, and far more effective.
